About Us

Makado is a real estate development firm with a unique focus on creating senior living communities. Prior to establishing the company in 2012, founder Mark Appelbaum served for over 20 years at Piper Jaffray as a managing director, the head of the senior living real estate practice, a member of the Fixed Income Operating Committee and a member of the leadership team.

At Makado we create living environments designed to have a strong sense of place within the fabric of the local community. We achieve our mission through a thoughtfully planned building design process, by seeking out areas that have a natural, built-in connection to the community and by working closely with people that know the area. The goal of every Makado community is to be a place where people can live vibrant, meaningful, connected lives with dignity and peace of mind.

Since 2012, our team has focused significant time and effort in developing a differentiated approach to developing senior living communities that follow national and international best practices in design, caregiving and development. We have a specific process and approach to senior care development as it relates to the positioning of the building with the community, models of caregiving, the role of technology and the creation of physical spaces that contribute to a living environment enabling residents to thrive in the later years of their lives.

Our first development was Maple Brook, in Maple Grove, Minnesota. The Rosemount, a 92-unit community that opened in Rosemount, Minnesota, in 2016, was the first senior living community for us and exemplifies our philosophy of integrating a campus into the greater surrounding community. Praha Village is a newly developed, 91-unit community in New Prague, Minnesota, that opened in January 2019, which also connects residents to the broader community and all it has to offer.
